This week, The Land Show with Dave and Johnny hosts Tommy Tidwell with the Alabama Wildlife Federation. Tommy talks about coordinating the statewide wild game cook-offs and previews cook-off events that are upcoming in Talladega and Mobile. The cook-offs raise money for the Alabama Wildlife Federation’s conservation efforts. Next, Russ Walters talks about the stability of commodity prices at harvest time and the fact that farmers prefer a fall drought over a summer drought. George Mann reports from pheasant hunting in South Dakota with his family and discusses quail and dove hunting opportunities in Alabama. Also on this week’s episode, Lake Martin’s Capt. David Hare catches saltwater striped bass, and Tim Baker is out in the field trapping beaver and eradicating dams. Both David and Tim talk about the current drought’s upsides, including increased fish numbers and decreased beaver numbers, respectively.

This week, The Land Show features Chris Isaacson, Executive Vice President for the Alabama Forestry Association. Chris discusses current trends in the timber market as a result of recent mill closures. He also describes the efforts of the Alabama Forestry Association as a lobbying group, such as focusing on county roads and bridges, property rights and hosting regional meetings for landowners. Next, co-host Jonathan Goode reports from College Station, Texas. Jonathan talks about helping to rewrite coursework for the Realtors Land Institute and the importance of working with a land broker associated with the RLI. Also on this week’s episode, Robert King gives a farming report from the Sunbelt Ag Expo in Moultrie, Ga.

This week on The Land Show, Dave and Johnny host Dan Jackson, Assistant State Forester with the Alabama Forestry Commission. Dan talks about the implications of the current drought alert and burn ban that has been placed on the northern two thirds of the state. Dan also explains what services the Forestry Commission provides for the citizens of Alabama. Also on The Land Show, Tim Baker talks about the opening of bow season, as well as primitive weapons and his construction of arrowheads. Kyle Ingalls discusses the retooling of timber mills, and Russ Walters touches on the success of this year’s cotton crop.

This week, The Land Show featured an in-the-field land business segment from the Montgomery Stockyards. Dave and friend Jeff Harrington attended the weekly cattle auction and interviewed Montgomery Stockyard owner Jerry Etheridge. Etheridge is also the president of the Livestock Marketing Association. The Montgomery Stockyards hosted world champion livestock auctioneer Andy White from Ohio to call the sale. Dave and Jeff enjoyed lunch at the Stockyard Café, known for its great beef dishes and homestyle “meat and three” lunches.

Also on The Land Show this week, Kyle Ingalls discusses holding and selling timberland through a self-directed IRA. Dave and Kyle invite listeners to attend a Land IRA Event sponsored by Southeastern Land Group and Advanta. The event will be Oct. 20 at the Balch and Bingham Law Firm in Birmingham starting at 6:30 p.m.

Finally, Jonathan Goode talks about the history of Elmore County and how close the vote was between Montgomery and Wetumpka to be the state capital. George Mann talks about how it’s been a great year for young deer and turkey, and Russ Walters talks about tractor plowing peanuts in Covington County.

This week, The Land Show focuses on the Tennessee Valley region and all that it has to offer. First, Dave talks to Southeastern Land Group agent Austin Ainsworth. Ainsworth, also the owner of Dream Ranch hunting and fishing resort in Guntersville, Ala., talks about the business and Lake Guntersville as a tourist destination. Next, Scottsboro resident Jack Gabriel highlights northeast Alabama, including caves, natural springs and geological formations found in Jackson County. Discussion of the Tennessee Valley region continues with Jonathan Goode talking about the Wheeler National Wildlife Refuge and the history of Joseph “Fighting Joe” Wheeler—the only American general who served with both the Union and Confederate forces. Tim Baker talks about the Decatur area as having some of the most productive crop land in the state, as well as the evolution of the city of Huntsville. Russ Walters gives an update on commodity prices, and Capt. David Hare gives a fishing report from Lake Martin.

This week on The Land Show, Dave and co-host George Mann focused on wildlife recreation. As its main guest, the show featured Chuck Sykes, Director of the Wildlife and Fisheries Division of the Alabama Department of Conservation and Natural Resources. Sykes discussed changes to hunting laws and the new mandatory game check system, as well as the extension of several different hunting seasons this year. In addition, Kyle Ingalls spoke about the current state of the hardwood timber market, and Jonathan Goode explained how Geographic Information System mapping works. Dave and George also responded to a listener email, discussing different mountain adventure cabin possibilities in North Alabama.

This week on The Land Show, Dave talks with Christian Brodbeck, a biosystems engineering research engineer with Auburn University. Brodbeck discusses the use of drone technology related to agriculture and timber applications, including new FAA requirements for commercial drone use. Also on this week’s show, Robert King recalls his childhood growing up on a farm and the values he gleaned from it. Kyle Ingalls talks timber markets and how the hardwood market specifically has seen success recently. In addition, Jonathan Goode recounts the history of Marion, Ala.—his hometown—and its role during the Civil War. The team expresses excitement for football season, cooler weather and hunting and fishing as staples of fall.

First, Justin Kane with Iron Horse Farms talks about entertaining veterans’ groups and wounded warriors on the organization’s hunting property. Next up, Dave and Jonathan talk with Jeff Hardy with the Outdoor Friends Forever foundation. Hardy and his brother Jim host hunting and fishing trips for people with disabilities. Also on this week’s episode, Russ Walters discusses current farm prices and building a home barn, while Tim Baker touches on the importance of creating duck habitats for successful duck hunting.

This week on The Land Show Dave talks with Brian Lucas, Ag Science teacher, FFA (Future Farmers of America) Advisor and coach at Thorsby High School in Chilton County. Brian and Dave talk about how important FFA is in introducing young people to farming and rural life skills that will help them be the future leaders in rural America. Thorsby is a 2A school but is a statewide powerhouse in FFA competitions.  There are over 200 FFA teams around the state that compete in statewide competitions. Brian shares how Thorsby FFA won 4 state titles in four different areas and their land judging team will be going to Oklahoma to compete in the National Championships. 

Jonathan Goode shares about a great fruit tasting event that he attended at the Auburn Extension service research center in Chilton County and how important the cooperative extension service is to our state. 

Russ Walters got us up to speed on current farm commodity prices and Dave was happy to see cotton prices moving in a positive direction. 

Dave also chats with George Mann and Coach Pat Dye at Coach Dye's Crooked Oaks Farm in Macon County.  Hear all the great things going on at Crooked Oaks; guided quail hunts, corporate retreats, family outings and weddings which have been a big hit in Coach Dye's beautiful barn/event center.

Also on this week’s show, Kyle talks about being diversified in different types of Timberland investments, Robert discusses how farmers strategically diversify their crops in order to hedge against market shifts and George Mann shared a great story on how he killed a massive Grizzly Bear with his bow in Alaska several years ago.  
Lastly, Jonathan talks to us about how to handle old historic family cemetery issues on farms that you are buying or selling.
